Rays Weekly Winter League Wrap-Up

Every Monday Rays Digest takes a look at how Rays players are performing in the winter leagues. This week saw 2011 first round pick Mikie Mahtook hit his first professional home run, Montgomery's Shane Dyer turn in an encouraging performance, and Durham infielder Daniel Mayora stay hot in Venezuela. Arizona Fall League


Mikie Mahtook: After a slow start to the AFL season, Mahtook finally seems to be settling in at the plate. On Wednesday he hit his first professional home run, and followed that by hitting his first ever triple in his next start on Friday. For the week Mahtook went 5 for 10, and now has hit safely in 6 straight games. He has multiple hits in 3 of his last 4 games, and has raised his AFL season average to .311.

Tim Beckham: Beckman went 3 for 12 on the week with 2 runs batted in. He has 8 extra base hits in 54 at bats with 11 runs batted in on the season, and is hitting .448 with runners on base. His on base percentage sits at a very respectable .360, but he has also struck out in 6 consecutive games, including a stretch of 4 straight games with multiple strikeouts. He has struggled in the field at times committing a team high 4 errors.

Tyler Bortnick: The Charlotte Stone Crabs second basemen went 2 for 11 on the week, and is now hitting .222 in 36 at bats. He has hit well at home (.313), but struggled on the road (.150). On the season he has scored 6 runs, stolen 2 bases, and has also hit a solo home run.

Shane Dyer: After getting battered around his last start, Dyer turned in a good performance on Thursday. He went 4.2 innings allowing a lone earned run on 5 hits while allowing no walks. He lowered his season earned run average to 4.58, and has now gone 2 consecutive starts without walking a batter. He is currently second on the Saguaros staff with 19.2 innings pitched.

Marquis Fleming: Fleming only appeared in one game last week, pitching 2 innings while giving up a run on 4 hits and a walk. For the season he has thrown 9.1 innings and struck 10 hitters, but has also struggled with his command walking 7.

Adam Liberatore: In 2 innings of work last week, Liberatore gave up a run on 2 hits and a walk. His season earned run average stands at 5.19, and hitters are hitting .343 off the left-hander.

Kirby Yates: Yates pitched twice last week, both times turning in a scoreless inning of work. He has a 5.40 earned run average on the season in 5 innings pitched with 7 strikeouts. He has not given up a run in 4 consecutive appearances since making a rocky debut back on October 7th when he gave up 3 runs in a third of an inning.



Dominican Winter League


Mayo Acosta: The Stone Crabs catcher has appeared in a lone game as a defensive replacement, and does not have an at bat.

Nevin Ashley: Ashley has 25 at bats in 9 games for the Gigantes del Cibao. He is hitting .240 with 5 runs batted in .

Elliott Johnson: Despite hitting only .235 in 51 at bats for the Gigantes del Cibao, Johnson sports a .350 on base percentage, having walked 7 times. He has 5 stolen bases and drove in his first runs of the season last week with a three-run homer.

Omar Luna: The Durham Bulls infielder has 1 hit in 6 at bats for Aguilas Cibaenas.

Cole Figueroa: Figueroa has struggled thus far for Leones del Escogido, hitting only .130 in 23 at bats. He has managed to score 6 runs, and is hitting .333 with runners in scoring position. He also not made an error in the field.



Venezuelan Winter League


Daniel Mayora: Mayora has been one of the VWL's best hitters thus far. He is eighth in the league in OPS with a .893 mark, and second in runs batted in with 14. He is currently hitting .315 with 6 extra base hits, and has hits in 5 of his last 6 games. He has been playing second base for Leones de Caracas, and has 54 at bats in 15 games.

Jose Lobaton: Lobaton is hitting .145 for Leoned de Caracas in 21 at bats. He has 3 runs batted in, and has played in 5 games.

Stephen Vogt: The Rays 2011 Minor League Player of the Year has yet to play in a game for Leones del Caracas.

Jose Bellorin: Bellorin who played for the VSL Rays in 2011, has not appeared in a game for Navegantes del Magallanes.

Robinson Chirinos: A wrist injury has kept Chirinos out of the lineup. He is expected to be ready for Spring Training.

Alejandro Torres: The 23 year old catcher who split time between Bowling Green and Charlotte in 2011, has yet to appear in a game for Navegantes del Magallanes.

Omar Bencomo, Reinaldo Lopez, Deivis Martinez, Eduar Quinonez, Wilking Rodriguez: All five minor league pitchers are on the roster of Navegantes del Magallanes, but have not seen action.

Albert Suarez: Suarez has started one game for Navegantes del Magallanes. He gave up a run on a hit and 3 walks on Friday.

Franklin Paz: The outfielder who was second in the Venezuela Summer League in home runs with 9, has yet to see action for Aguilas del Zulia.

Alex Torres: Torres who should be fighting for an Opening Day spot on the Rays roster, has not pitched yet in the VWL, but is on the roster of Aguilas del Zulia.

Luis Guzman: Guzman who had a 4.85 ERA for the VSL Rays in 2011, has yet to see any action.

Ryan Reid: Reid who split time between AA Montgomery and AAA Durham, has appeared in 3 games for Aguilas del Zulia, and has a 10.80 ERA in 1.2 innings pitched

Rob Delaney: Delaney who saw action for the Rays in 2011, has a 4.76 ERA in 5.2 innings pitched for Bravos de Margarita. He has appeared in 4 games, and has allowed 6 hits while striking out 3.

Ray Olmedo: The veteran infielder has one hit in 11 at bats, and is expected to only be a late inning defensive replacement for his team Tiburones de La Guaira this season.

Ricky Orta: Orta is listed on the roster for Cardenales de Lara, but has not appeared in a game and is still coming back from Tommy John surgery.
