2012 MLB Draft Q & A: Wyatt Mathisen

Calallen High School (TX) catcher Wyatt Mathisen

Our exclusive 2012 MLB Draft Q & A series continues. Wyatt Mathisen, a catcher out of Calallen High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, has committed to play at Texas next year. Mathisen is ranked 54th in Frankie Piliere's Top 100 Draft Prospects, and inside he discusses his own strengths at the plate and his probable upcoming decision between the Longhorns or taking a professional contract.

Rays Digest: You play catcher, shortstop and pitcher. What is your main position? Where position do you see yourself playing in the future?

Wyatt Mathisen: Catcher for sure. There's not a lot of catching in the game right now. I know that catchers can make their way up a lot faster than playing shortstop, and I'm not that fast, so I know catcher is my main spot.

Rays Digest: What would a scouting report on you look like? What is unique about the way you play?

Wyatt Mathisen: I would say my strength, quick hands and the plate, good discipline. I need to work on my catching and perfecting it.

Rays Digest: What is you're the strongest part of your hitting ability?

Wyatt Mathisen: I'm real disciplined at the plate, I won't strike out a lot, I'll draw a lot of walks. I can hit gap-to-gap with a lot of power.

Rays Digest: You committed to Texas very early, in August of 2010. Why did you decide to play at Texas?

Wyatt Mathisen: Just the tradition they have. I know they are always going to be good, I have no doubts in their program, and their coaching is really great.

Rays Digest: What would it take from a professional team for you to decide to skip college and go straight to the pros?

Wyatt Mathisen: I just want to be treated fairly with money and stuff like that. I'm not really worried about the round, but just getting the right amount, enough that I would have to take it to not go to college.

Rays Digest: Is there a team you've grown up dreaming to play for or a player you try to model yourself after?

Wyatt Mathisen: My favorite player is Evan Longoria so I guess the Rays are my favorite team. I just like his swing and how he plays third base, I just do everything I can do to try to be relaxed like his swing and his whole mindset so I'm trying to do the same stuff he does.

Rays Digest: What are you interested in outside of baseball?

Wyatt Mathisen: If I didn't play major league baseball I would want to stay in baseball, go into sports management and be a GM or something like that.
