Austin Nichols checks in with the latest on the Hot Rods from Bowling Green. Inside, left-handed pitcher Felipe Rivero will be a member of the World squad in this year's Futures Game, shortstop Jake Hager is hot at the dish and outfielder Todd Glaesmann continues to impress with the bat.

The Hot Rods ended a four-game slide June 29 against the Lansing Lugnuts. Bowling Green is currently 4-4 in the second half of the season after clinching a wild card spot in the first half by going 51-26. On June 29 the Hot Rods set season highs in three in-game categories [most 2B: Jake Hager (3), most SB: Ryan Brett (3), largest margin of victory (11)] and tied five other season in-game highs.

Rivero to play for the World

Felipe Rivero was recently named to the World Team in the 2012 SiriusXM Futures Game on July 8th at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium. He is the second player from Bowling Green to be named to the Futures game.

Rivero was named the Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April and his first half numbers help show why. In the first half Rivero went 6-5 with a 2.42 ERA in 13 starts. In 74.1 innings pitched Rivero gave up just 20 earned runs while striking out 66 hitters and allowing only 18 walks.

Rivero exited the game after just three innings in his last start on Saturday. In those three innings Rivero gave up three hits, no runs or walks and had two strikeouts. According to Bowling Green manager Brady Williams the reason for Rivero’s early departure was to limit his innings as the team gets later into the season.

“We can’t keep throwing him or he’ll be done in a month,” Williams said.

Hager Hot

The 19-year-old shortstop became the third player in franchise history to record five hits in one game last Friday. The previous three times have all occurred during the 2012 season with Todd Glaesmann and Ryan Brett both accomplishing the feat in May.

In Hager's record-tying game, he went 5-for-5 and all five hits came with runners in scoring position. He drove in five runs and struck three doubles along the way.

Brady Williams regards Hager as one of his go-to-guys in the second half of the season and credits Hager’s success to an adjustment in his swing and being more patient at the plate.

“He’s a very good player,” Williams said. “He’s got some confidence going.”

Hager is swinging an unbelievably good bat in the last 10 games. He is 18-for-41 giving him a .439 AVG and has four doubles and 12 RBI.

In fact, Hager has been hot the whole month of June. During the month he posted a .372 AVG, scoring 11 times while driving in 12. He also showed patience by walking 10 times and only striking out 7.

Todd Glaesmann: A force to be reckoned with

Todd Glaesmann has been another Hot Rod player that has really stood out in the past week.

“He’s driving the ball well,” Williams said.

Like Hager, Glaesmann had a field day against Lansing on June 29, going 4-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI. He also added a double to his outstanding effort at the plate.

In his last 10 games Glaesmann is 14-for-40 giving him a.350 average with two doubles, two home runs and 8 RBI.

Extra base hits have been a regular occurence for Glaesmann in the month of June where he has six doubles and five home runs to go along with his 16 RBI.
