2008 Season
Springer recorded the final out of the Cardinals final out of the 2008 season, perhaps his final appearance in a major league uniform. The soon to be 40-year-old right hander (turns 40 in November), a free-agent at the end of the season, has been asked by the Cardinals to return in 2009. Springer appeared in 70 games, posting a record of 2-1 witha 2.32 ERA.
2007 Season
Springer posted an 8-1 mark with a 2.18 ERA, appearing in a career-high 76 games while limiting opposing batters to a .181 batting average. His 2.18 ERA ranked seventh among all National League relievers and his eight wins represented a career single-season high.
Springer owned the team’s top two scoreless innings streaks (17.2 IP and 14.0) and was credited with 15 Holds while allowing just six of 27 inherited runners to score. Springer fanned 66 batters in his 66.0 IP and walked just 19.
Career Notes
A seventh round draft pick of the New York Yankees in 1989, Springer broke into the majors in 1992. He has a career mark of 33-40 and 4.70 ERA in 594 games (27 starts), with the Yankees, Angels, Phillies, Astros, Diamondbacks, Braves and Cardinals.
Springer appeared in 17 games for the Cardinals in 2003, winning the season opener, before being sidelined by an elbow injury. The injury made him contemplate retirement.
