| Nick Barnese was the Tampa Bay Rays’ third-round pick in the 2007 draft out of a high school in California. After signing, Barnese reported to rookie-level Princeton, where he went 2-2 with a 3.22 ERA and 37-to-4 K/W ratio in 36.1 innings pitched over nine appearances, including eight starts. For his performance, he was elected as the sixth-best prospect on the circuit by Baseball America. The young righty has a fastball that sits in the low-90s, an improving 12-to-6 breaking ball and a developing change-up. He knows how to pitch as well, using his excellent command of the strike zone to frustrate young hitters.
